Catching Panda

Found out that -MUD was arriving from Narita on that day, and boy was I excited. Got all the stuffs ready and off I went. It was about 2 hours before the arrival, sometime around 630pm. It was a little bit risky as the flight was showing that it slowed down and would not reach till sometime about 7. After some thought, it was a GO. After all, a China Airlines Cargo was scheduled anyway, so even IF I were to miss -MUD, at least I would have something. Being the beginning of the year, darkness doesn't fall till about 7.30pm, so that was also a driving factor.

Anyway, arrived to see 9M-MXV arriving. Gear was not up so it was just a feast to the eyes. Was greeted non-stop by 4 turboprops. Intervals between arrivals were slightly longer than that of the morning sessions.

As time progressed, the sun set more and more, moving towards the horizon and the big hill. Skies were quite clear, giving great lighting to the arriving planes.

On the outside, the -500 and -600 series look completely identical. It is on the insides where the changes are more apparent, the cockpit being one of them.

Then came AirAsia's special. One specially painted for the concert. A nice surprise I must say. This one is inbound from Langkawi.

The silhouette appeared, gracefully descending to its destination. 2 engines with a blister on the nose.

"Malaysia Welcomes Fu Wa & Feng Yi". I, welcome 9M-MUD with open arms and smiles.

MAS comes in to end the day. This one still in the older livery.

Thanks for enjoying.

2014.06.09 - Monday Spotting (Part 1)

Now that the Singapore Airshow edition is over, let's snap back to Penang. I've made many trips, so I shall put them up here session by session.

Arrived at 10am to catch MASKargo's A332. Waited a while before seeing it come in. From a far, it was making a hard left turn from the West, too close to the runway and at too high an altitude. Made some adjustments to the left, then to the right, before abandoning that approach and performing a go-around.

Turning in for the second approach

Successful second attempt

And with this capture, I'm happy to have hit the target of getting all 4 of MASKargo's A332Fs. The next one that came in was much smaller than the Airbus.

Firefly ATR72-500 (9M-FYF)

This trip's weather was intermittently good and bad, with clouds blocking out the sun one minute, and sun shining the next. (YES, really changing by the minute).

SilkAir A320 (9V-SLS)

And the sun came out once to light this flying tiger. Tiger Airways is also known as Tigerair, with some of their planes already painted with the new name / livery. Some of them also come with sharklets installed. For now, I shall label them as I see them.

Tiger Airways A320-232 (9V-TAZ)

After the tiger came roaring in, the clouds came back. Though no worries, as it provided me with nice and comfortable shade. Besides, from a far, there were gaps in the clouds where the sun beams could shine through. This next one was a relatively new aircraft.

Malaysia Airlines B737-8H6 (9M-MXJ)

Shortly after the -800 series, the -500 series paid me a visit, well more like paid Penang a visit.

Sriwijaya Air B737-524 (PK-CLO)

The -500 series looks really cute, with its rather short body but wide wingspan, enough to earn it the term "Baby Boeing".

This was about the best the weather was that day. It started getting worse after this baby Boeing. Part 2 coming up real shortly.

Stay tuned.

Highlights of Penang - November 2013 - Part 3

For the third instalment, let's begin with something rather unusual.

Firefly ATR72-500 (9M-FYA) with a missing landing gear door

FedEx MD-11F (N593FE) using the entire length of the runway to slow down
Even heavies like the 747 turn at the taxiway just before this location. Maybe the pilot wanted to give me a great photo op?

Malindo B737-9GPER (9M-LNL)

Eva Air Cargo B747-45E (B-16404)

RAF C-17A Globemaster III (ZZ177)

MAS Kargo A330-223F (9M-MUB)

Garuda Airways CRJ-1000 (PK-GRJ)

That ends the highlights of Penang for November 2013

Thanks for viewing.
